How to Figure Out Your Skin Type
Have you ever wondered how to figure out your skin type? We all know that we need to cleanse and moisturise daily, but did you know that different types of skin have varying needs when it comes to skincare?
To best care for your skin, it’s important to know what type of skin you have. Although everyone’s skin is unique, there are five primary skin types: normal, dry, oily, combination, and sensitive.
Different skin types
- Normal – balanced: neither oily nor dry; usually a smooth texture
- Dry – dull, rough, flaky, or scaly that often feels tight and can show visible lines
- Oily – an excess of sebum; skin appears shiny and feels greasy; often prone to blemishes and breakouts
- Combination – includes areas that are oily (especially T-zone) and dry (cheeks)
- Sensitive – often red, itchy, dry; vulnerable to external irritants
But how do you figure out your skin type?
The simplest way is through careful observation. Alternatively, there’s a test that can be carried out at home. Both of which require you to sit back and relax for 30 minutes – a great excuse for a little time out!
Observation – bare-faced method:
- wash your face with a gentle cleanser, then gently pat it dry
- do not apply any products
- wait for 30 minutes and then observe
- Does your skin appear shiny? You likely have oily skin
- Does your skin feel tight? Is it flaky or scaly? You likely have dry skin
- Does your skin shine in your T-Zone only (across your forehead and down over your nose and chin)? You probably have combination skin
- Does your skin feel hydrated and comfortable, but not oily? You likely have normal skin
Blotting Sheet Test:
- wash your face with a gentle cleanser then gently pat it dry
- wait for 30 minutes
- press clean blotting sheets (or a tissue) to the face, starting at the T-zone and moving to the cheeks, chin, and forehead. Use one sheet per area of your face.
- hold each sheet to the light – your skin type will generally be dependent on how much oil is visible
- Oily sheets? You have oily skin
- No oil on sheets? You have dry skin
- A small amount of oil from T-Zone only? You have a combination skin
- A little bit of oil on sheets? You have normal skin
It can be difficult to tell whether or not you have sensitive skin, as you can have one of the other skin types and still have sensitive skin. Read below if you think your skin may be sensitive.
Skincare for different types of skin
Those with normal skin – maintain a good skincare regimen: stay healthy and hydrated; wear sunscreen; cleanse and moisturise daily. Natural products are always the best option. A good way to test-drive these is with our Skincare Travel Pack, which contains everything you need to get started.
Those with dry skin…
Look for products that hydrate, nourish and moisturise but are free from alcohol, harsh fragrances, dyes, or chemicals. A perfect option is our Natural Body Butter – pure organic goodness for your face and body. Don’t spend too long in the shower and make sure the water is warm, not hot. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and wear sunscreen – every day! Use a humidifier, especially in drier months of the year.
Those with oily skin…
Look for products that bring balance to the face and don’t clog pores. Wash your face twice a day to remove dirt and bacteria, but don’t over-wash! Use a gentle face wash and toner, like our Witch Hazel Toner. Exfoliate twice a week to remove dead skin cells. Remember to moisturise so that your skin stays hydrated and doesn’t overproduce sebum.
Those with combination skin…
Look for products made for all skin types. Apply a clay face mask to the T-zone and a soothing face mask to the cheeks. Exfoliate gently – but not too often. We have the perfect recipe for a natural exfoliate combining our Natural Makeup Remover and Cleanser and a sprinkle of baking soda.
Those with sensitive skin…
Choose natural, gentle products that nourish and reinforce the skin whilst soothing the discomfort and red areas. Make use of good face oil, like our Frankincense Face Oil. The Three Gems range was originally formulated especially for sensitive skin and is gentle and chemical-free.
Your skin type has a lot to do with genetics, but it can also be affected by external factors – like the weather – and does change over time. As a result, it’s important to always be aware of your skin type to make informed decisions and tailor your skincare regimen accordingly.
We hope this has helped you figure out your skin type. As always, you can contact us with any questions or clarification on what products are best for you.
