The shelf life of the Lip Balm, Body Butter and Natural Deodorant is between nine and twelve months, and the Frankincense Face Oil, Makeup Remover & Cleanser, and Witch Hazel Toner between 18 months and two years. The times vary, as we use the earliest use-by date on the ingredients used.
We use natural vitamin e as a preservative in our Lip Balm, Body Butter, Natural Deodorant, and Frankincense Face Oil. It is a fat-soluble vitamin found naturally in many plant oils, typically soya bean oil, which is where the vitamin e we use is derived from.
New Zealand does not produce the ingredients used in Three Gems products. It would be wonderful if we could! All the ingredients we use are sourced from reputable organically certified New Zealand suppliers, who source them from ethical and sustainable growers around the globe. These suppliers bring the ingredients into the country in large quantities, reducing the carbon footprint by volume. We use the best quality we can, which means the ingredients come from where they grow best.

Petitgrain is a citrus shrub found in South America. The leaves are used to produce an oil that is a very effective antiperspirant, is antifungal, anti-infectious, and also used as a calming agent. We use petitgrain in our Natural Doedorant.
We add strawberry seed oil to both our Natural Deodorant and Lip Balm for its intense moisturising properties. The strawberry seed oil also enables the deodorant and lip balm to glide on smoothly.
One of the ingredients in our Natural Deodorant is natural beeswax, which can vary in colour from time to time. The strawberry seed oil we use in the deodorant is a dark green colour, which is why the deodorant has a greenish tinge.
The secret ingredient in our Lip Balms is strawberry seed oil, which has intense moisturising properties. This help your lips stay moisturised for ages, and the lip balm glide on smoothly.
There are two carrier oils in the Frankincense Face Oil – organic argan oil and organic evening primrose oil. Argan oil is an excellent moisturiser for a wide range of skin conditions, absorbs quickly and leaves no residue. Used regularly, argan’s amazing host of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory qualities will help restore the skin’s texture and youthfulness. Evening primrose oil has rich stores of essential fatty acids, improves elasticity, dry skin conditions, and softens skin.
Frankincense essential oil is a powerful astringent, meaning it helps protect skin cells. It can be used to help reduce acne blemishes, the appearance of large pores, prevent wrinkles, and it even helps lift and tighten skin to naturally slow signs of aging.
A premium oil for mature skin and anti-aging formulations, frankincense stimulates regeneration and healing to rejuvenate and tone the skin.
Frankincense is considered a safe oil for skin support during pregnancy. Skin can sometimes break out during pregnancy and breastfeeding, but just using skincare containing frankincense can be very supportive. Frankincense is also great for emotional support and can help ease worries around pregnancy and birth.

Fractionated coconut oil is coconut oil with the fatty acids removed. The easiest way to describe it is that it’s a bit like curds and whey. Fractionated coconut oil is the whey of the coconut. It does not contain as much goodness as the full coconut oil, but as a stable liquid is much easier to use to remove makeup, and as it gets washed off straight away the goodness would get washed away also.
The Body Butter is certainly gentle enough to use on your face as a moisturiser. It is the perfect “one product does all” Great to use from top to toe.
When applying the Body Butter as a face moisturiser in the morning, only a small amount is needed, and it is best to wait a few minutes before applying makeup.
A great rule of thumb is that where your skin is thinner (e.g. on your face), less product is needed. Where skin is thicker, like your hands or feet, more can be applied.
As our Body Butter consists of only plant-based butters and oils, they will melt if left in direct sunlight, or stored over 30 degrees Celcius. They will still be useable, but not have the same consistency.
If left in the sun, or near a heat source you may notice the Body Butter develops lots of little bubbles. This does not affect its effectiveness, and can still be safely used.
The body butter will be softer in warm temperatures, and firmer in cool, as they are made with only plant-based butters and oils.
The active ingredients in the Natural Deodorant are baking soda and petitgrain oil. Baking soda is a very effective odour eliminator, and petitgrain oil is a natural antiperspirant. The natural arrowroot powder we use is very effective as a moisture absorbent.
Our Natural Deodorant works well against both wetness and odour. The petitgrain essential oil combined with natural arrowroot powder makes it an effective antiperspirant.
Most people get around four months from a tube of the Natural Deodorant. Those using the plastic-free pot find it can last a bit longer. It depends on the temperature as it is slightly softer in warm locations, so easier to use a bit more.
You only need a tiny bit for it to be effective. Just a “dab-dab” of the tube, no need to swipe up and down (unless it is very firm in extra cold locations).
We add strawberry seed oil to both our Natural Deodorant and Lip Balm for its intense moisturising properties. The strawberry seed oil also enables the deodorant and lip balm to glide on smoothly.
The Natural Deodorant will not leave any marks on your clothes as long as you follow these guidelines:
Only apply a tiny amount. There is no need to cover the entire armpit area. Just a “dab-dab” is sufficient for the deodorant to be effective. Don’t swipe up and down.
Allow a few minutes for the butters and oils in the deodorant to be absorbed into your skin before dressing.
Exactly the same product is in both the Natural Deodorant tube and pot. There is approximately the same amount in each as well, despite the tube being labeled 85g (we have found a way to be more generous with our filling of the tubes).
Some people find the tube more convenient to use, while others like the sustainability of using a plastic-free pot that can be re-used or returned for $1 off your next purchase.
No, the Natural Deodorant won’t melt into a puddle. It will definitely soften in warmer locations. The deodorant contains beeswax to enable it to hold its form. It is best not to use too much pressure when it is very warm and only use a very small amount.

To get our Lip Balm in to the tubes: The ingredients are carefully melted into a liquid form and then poured into the tubes.

We don’t claim the Lip Balm to have any specific spf properties. However, they do have a coconut oil base, which is reputed to have a small degree of natural sun protection.
If in a very warm environment, the Lip Balm will definitely soften, but won’t melt completely. We use beeswax to enable the lip balm to hold it’s form when warm.
We recommend using only light pressure when applying the lip balm in warm weather.

We’re sure everyone has their own preferences and routines, but this is what Louise has found works for her:
Morning:
Simple face wash with plain water, followed by Witch Hazel Toner sprayed on to a moistened cotton pad wiping the face in a gentle upward motion. Then a thin layer of one of the Body Butters, patting carefully around the eyes, and using a gentle upward motion, waiting a few minutes before applying makeup.
Evening:
Remove eye and lip colour using a small amount of Makeup Remover and Cleanser on fingertips, then wiping with a cotton pad. Apply a little more Makeup Remover and Cleanser over the entire face, and wipe off with a tissue or reusable cotton pad. Gently wash face with warm water. Spray Witch Hazel Toner on to a moistened cotton pad and apply using a gentle upward motion, followed by the Frankincense Face Oil and a slick of Lip Balm.
Occasionally:
The Makeup Remover and Cleanser is wonderful to use as an exfoliant. Just put a little in the palm of your hand, add a sprinkling of baking soda, rub together, and gently massage into your skin (avoiding your eye area). Then gently wash off with warm water. This is best done after cleansing, before toning.
