Why use a toner?
Why use a toner, indeed?
A face toner removes any last traces of dirt, grime, and impurities stuck in your pores after you wash your face. When added to your daily skincare routine and used regularly, it can have a very positive impact on the appearance and tightness of your pores. Face toners prep the skin for moisturisers, face oils, or serums while getting rid of excess oil and stubborn dirt or any makeup left over on your face after you wash it. This step is not a replacement for cleansing, but is best thought of as a second rinse cycle with added benefits after cleansing.
Historically – aestheticians would use a toner as a part of their facial protocol to remove any remaining residue after cleansing the face and neck. Toner was usually an astringent that removed any excess oil or debris left on the skin after washing. It would normally have an alcohol base and be applied with a cotton ball, doing the final clean-up step before proceeding with the facial routine.
But what of modern toners? What should we expect from them?
In our expert opinion they should at the very least:
- Help remove any residue missed during cleansing;
- help open pores, and provide carriers, to receive active ingredients from serums, moisturisers, and face oils;
- maintain the integrity of the pH mantle of your skin;
- soothe and calm skin, reducing any inflammation.
We just happen to have a Witch Hazel Toner that will keep your skin looking clear and refreshed.
Keen to give it a go?
Stash one at your desk or in easy reach so you can give it a refreshing spritz throughout the day. This is especially important if you find your skin is oily after a long day at work. It would be easy to assume in this case, that your skin is on the oily side, when in fact it is your skin using your natural sebum to protect it from drying out in artificially ventilated spaces. Using a toner replaces your skin’s need to produce oil as it provides that much-needed balance to your skin.
You can also use our Witch Hazel Toner as a spot treatment for acne, or any annoying little break-outs during the day. Keep it close to hand during stressful times and use it like a sanitising spray for those problematic spots.
Plus, here are some added benefits that make witch hazel a truly multi-use product:
- Witch hazel relieves inflammation;
- reduces skin irritation;
- fights acne;
- alleviates scalp sensitivity;
- protects against skin damage;
- wards off infection.
